HAPPY 30 YEARS NH!

Today as we celebrate 30 years we hear from former Club player and current club Coach Robbie Tindall – another familiar face to all past and current club members!

“I started playing Water Polo for North Harbour in 1993. Back then we were still called Glenfield Aquatics. This was well before MISH had been built. I played age group polo from 1993 until 1998. My first coach was Steve Knights and I was also coached by Davor Carevic and Joseph Penney. I first played for the senior men’s team in 1995, and I played through until 2012, with a couple of short stints away when I was living overseas.

Davor was my coach for the whole 14 or so years, and in the 2000s we won 6 National Titles, including 4 in a row between 2001 and 2004. I was part of 4 of those Title winning teams. We won our first title when we were still training at Glenfield, in the tiny divewell, which we called ‘The Dungeon’, so it was quite a step up when we moved across to MISH full time from 2002. Along with Davor we had some great Managers like Kevin Payne, John Payne and Ron Starnes.

I began coaching in the late 90s and coached mostly boys teams. A highlight was coaching guys who would become my long-term team mates for seniors; Matt Payne, Mark Casey, Dave Broome, Nick Grieve and others, and winning a number of National and Pan Pac titles. After a break in coaching between 2005 and 2014 I returned to coaching age group teams again, this time mostly girls teams. I coached u16 and u18 for a few years and more recently I have been coaching u12s where my daughters; Sasha and Rose have been team members.

I have done stints on the committee as men’s club captain, and as a Referee, but my fondest memories are of playing and coaching for North Harbour, a club we all love. I’m stoked to return to coach u14 girls again this season and hoping for a less interrupted year than last year!”
