May 2024 - Gabby Doyle


This month we hear from one of the club's brightest young talents in Gabby Doyle. Gabby has played for our Hammerhead Senior Women's Team since 2023, and is currently in the U18 Maroon Girls Team. She has also recently won the Finn Lowery Scholarship and competed in the Senior World Championships in Doha. Get to know more about Gabby below:

 

How long have you been playing water polo?

I’ve been playing water polo since I was 8 years old.

 

What made you take up the sport?

I always enjoyed watching my siblings play and looked up to them, so I decided to start playing too.

 

What do you think is the most challenging part of the sport?

The most challenging part of the sport is maintaining a strong mindset. Staying composed under pressure and overcoming self-doubt. When I have big games, I get really nervous. It's been crucial for me to learn to stay calm and trust myself. 

 

What is the most rewarding part of the sport for you?

I've made many friendships and best friends through water polo, and we always have fun together. The shared experiences and teamwork create strong bonds that go beyond the game.

 

You recently came back from the Senior World Championships in Doha, how was the experience going up against the best players and teams in the world?

Competing at the Senior World Championships in Doha was an incredible experience. Going up against the best players and teams in the world was both challenging and inspiring. It pushed me to elevate my game and learn from some of the top athletes in the sport. The high level of competition was intense, but it also motivated me to keep improving and striving to improve.

 

What is your biggest Water Polo Highlight been so far?

My biggest highlight was at the U20 World Championships, being named Player of the Match against South Africa. It was a thrilling game, and receiving that recognition was an incredible honour. It felt rewarding to see my hard work and dedication pay off.

 

Do you have a Water Polo ‘idol’ you look up to? Who is this and why?

My water polo idol is my sister Bernadette. She inspires me every day with her dedication and relentless work ethic. Bernadette always trains incredibly hard, setting a high standard for herself and everyone around her. Her commitment to improving and pushing her limits motivates me to strive for excellence in my own water polo and game play.

 

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time in terms of Water Polo?

In 5 years time, I see myself having just played overseas and finished university, possibly in the States. I aim to have gone to my first Olympics in 2028 or be preparing for the 2032 Olympics
