What a great night of Water Polo at AUTMillennium tonight. We had our finals week for both Junior League and Intermediate tonight and there certainly were some fantastic games. See game report below;
Our Junior League started off with our B Grade Bronze match between Long Bay and Rangi Boys B. Rangi got off to a great start and were up 3-0 up at half time. Long Bay came out firing in the second half and were determined to get on the score board. #3 from Long Bay had a great last quarter scoring two goals and the game was even at full time which led to a penalty shootout. After some near misses, Rangi came out on top winning the game 4 -6.
Our B Grade final was up next with WBHS B playing Northcote. Both teams have been dominating the B Grade all term so this was sure to be a close game. Northcote had a strong start and with two goals coming from #9 Liam Greenacre they went ahead 3-2 at half time. Another two goals from Liam and two from #8 George Brown saw Northcote pull ahead to 7 goals. Westlake were not going to give up that easy and two goals from #4 in the fourth brought the boys up to 4 goals, unfortunately that was not enough. Northcote winning with a final score of 4-7.
The A Grade Bronze match between Kristin Girls and Rangi Boys showed the strength of Rangi Boys. The boys had a massive 5-0 quarter to start off and kept the pressure on the Kristin Girls the whole game. Both #8 Jaedan Salvador and #9 Flynn Howarth Dawson scoring 3 goals for Rangi saw them pull ahead to win the game 2 -19.
The final between WBHS A and Kristin Boys saw some of our top junior players battling each other. The score was even at 2-2 at the end of the first. After a team talk at quarter time the Westlake boys came out firing, managing to get the score to 7-2 at the end of the third. Kristin’s #11 Daniel Harris was not going to let them win that easy scoring a whopping 4 goals to bring the Kristin boys to 7-6. With some great defence from Westlake they managed to keep Kristin out and win the game with a final score of 7-6.
We also had some close games in our 5th/6th and 7th/8th play offs. Carmel and WBHS C both had close games but both managed to pull away at the end after very close games to win 8-6. TGS and AJHS were goal for goal all game and no one could manage to find the back of the net to get the winning goal so the game ended in a draw with 5 goals each. WGHS had an outstanding game and bet Rosmini 15-2 in what was a tough battle for Rosmini.
Intermediate League started off with two very intense games with our A Grade Final and B Grade Bronze being played at the same time. MBIS A were top of the table after winning most of their games and keen to keep themselves at number 1. Three goals from Murrays Bay’s #2 Daniel Warman saw the team pull ahead 6-3 at half time. Both teams scored another two goals each in the fourth which saw Murrays Bay win the game 8-5. The B Grade bronze game was the closest game of the night. The teams were goal for goal the whole game resulting in a tie at the end of the fourth quarter. The game went into golden goal and Belmont had a big opportunity to score with a free shot at goal. Northcote’s #1 was not going to let them win that easy and made a fantastic save giving the Belmont team another chance with a 2m. Belmont made a quick pass out to a free player and Northcote’s defence was too slow to respond with Belmont slotting a top corner goal to win the game 6-5.
Our A Grade Bronze was another close game with Carmel playing TNIS. Carmel took an early lead at half time with a 4-3 score. #4 for Carmel, Grace Stephens had her eyes on that third place and scored a massive 4 goals in the second half bringing the team up to 8 goals. TNIS scored some great goals but couldn’t quite catch up to Carmel’s 8. Final score 8-5 to Carmel. The B Grade final saw MBIS B and Birkdale matching up with each other. These two teams have been dominant in B Grade all term which meant it was going to be a good game. The game was close right up until the 4th quarter where Birkdale managed to pull away scoring 4 goals in the final quarter. The final score being 7-2 to Birkdale.
The B Grade 5th/6th play-off saw Rosmini play AJHS. The game was even at half time and that was when Rosmini managed to pull away scoring 7 goals within the second half to win the game 12-4. Our A Grade 5th/6th saw the Northcross girls come out strong and got themselves up 5-0 just before half time. Kristin wanted to get themselves on the scoreboard and that saw #10 scoring two goals before half time to bring the score to 5-3. From this point on Kristin were on a roll and nothing was stopping them from scoring. They managed to get another five goals before the end of the game while the Northcross girls were only able to get 2. Final result was 8-7 to Kristin.
Again Congratulations to all teams on a fantastic term of Water Polo. Enjoy your well-deserved break and we will see you back next term!
