September 21st saw the launch of the Finn Lowery Foundation. This foundation has been established to assist our club and family members should they find themselves dealing with some form of mental illness. It can be a stressful time for all, and this fund could help make life easier in times of need – in some cases the foundation will be able to assist players, coaches or families with the costs of specialized care. The club will also be establishing a wellness programme to promote dialogue and education around mental health issues within our community. Finally, there is also a scholarship award presented annually to a member of NHWPC to recognize excellence and courage. Details will be available shortly.
Finn Lowery was an exceptional young man and much-loved member of the North Harbour Water Polo community, who died in April after a long battle with depression. The Gala night and auction, along with a Give-a-little page has raised over $120,000 to date. Comedian Jono Pryor was MC on the night and radio personality Bryce Casey the keynote speaker – both tackling the issue of mental health after the loss of a much-loved friend of theirs.
We will continue to announce more developments within the foundation in coming months.
