Caitlin Lopes da Silva takes on the world!

We’re really proud of our members who head offshore to continue their love of water polo. Here Caitlin keeps us updated on her polo journey since playing four seasons for the University of Hawai’i.

After considering a few clubs throughout Europe, I made my way to Italy where I played for a club in Sicily. I joined an experienced team with several Olympians who won silver in Rio, and a few others who had competed in London, Beijing, Athens, and even in the Sydney Olympics!

Living and playing in Italy for 9 months was one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences of my life. Getting to travel and compete throughout Italy and other countries around Europe was a highlight. As well as learning a language, being exposed to a completely different system of Water Polo, meeting a number of awesome people, and eating the most delicious food!

My team finished up third in Italy which was a good note to end on. I left Italy in May and started preparing for World Champs in Budapest that began in July. Having the opportunity to represent New Zealand is a special thing, especially when competing in Hungary where Water Polo is the national sport. Playing with such a positive team and for a passionate coach was an honor. Also, being able to witness the best Water Polo in the world was unforgettable. We made it into the top 12 which was a positive achievement for New Zealand.

A few weeks later, I was off to meet the World University Games Water Polo team in Taipei. From the moment I set foot in Taipei, it was like nothing I had experienced before. The World University Games mirrors the Olympic games and is internationally recognized as the next big thing after the Olympics.

It was the first time that a Water Polo team had been invited to compete for New Zealand at the games. I had the privilege of being the water polo team captain and I was selected to be the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Walking out into that stadium,  fully packed with supporters was one of the most incredible moments, something that I will never forget. Being able to represent my country for a second time within the past few months was once again such a blessing. I was humbled to experience the games along side all the Team New Zealand athletes and support staff.

Water Polo has opened up many doors in my life. I am beyond grateful for all the places it has taken me and the people it has led me to meet. I am excited to hear what opportunities the sport brings to you.
